All organizations are required by law to be compliant in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). Besides the fact that failure to meet standards is punishable by law, there are tangible benefits to compliance. Compliance will minimise the risk of lawsuits, compensatory damage claims, incarceration, losses in productivity, fines, penalties, and even loss of lives.
The initial step to becoming legally compliant is to identify an organization’s risk areas through a simple audit, and to then systematically address each shortcoming through employing the recommendations generated from the audit. Thereafter, an ongoing management system must be implemented in order to ensure that compliance is maintained.
